The appearance by Microsoft "Halo" franchise development director Frank O'Connor at this weekend's Emerald City ComiCon had our friend Jake Metcalf, video-game blogger, very excited about what might be announced. Could this be the stealth unveiling of "Halo IV"?!
Well, no, as it turned out. As Metcalf reports from the scene, the company instead used the venue to announce a new trilogy of "Halo" novels from science fiction writer Greg Bear, another of the possibilities Metcalf had cited in advance. It's interesting news for hard-core "Halo" fans, but not exactly on the level of a new installment in the blockbuster video-game franchise.
O'Connor had been content manager at "Halo" developer Bungie Studios. Microsoft retained ownership of the "Halo" franchise when it announced Bungie's spin-off two years ago (as Metcalf accurately predicted at the time). O'Connor returned to Microsoft last year to head up the company's Halo franchise development team.
Despite the lack of actual "Halo IV" news this weekend, Metcalf wasn't deterred from making inferences about the future of the franchise:
I can't say "ZOMG! Halo IV is totally coming". It is still too early for that. However I can say "ZOMG! I learned a lot about the current Microsoft cooperate structure in relation to who is in charge of the Halo intellectual property and that structure is extremely likely to eventually lead to Halo projects and eventually Halo IV".
