Pulitzer to online news sites: You’re not worthy of this prize

This year, the Pulitzer Prizes board for the first time said that online-only news organizations were eligible for the top award in U.S. journalism. But despite entries from several web sites, none was honored or named a finalist for news coverage when the 2009 list was announced Monday.

It should be noted that the news web site Politico was a Pulitzer finalist this year, but it was for Matt Wuerker’s editorial cartoons. And several of the Pulitzers this year went to newspapers that incorporated internet coverage in their entries.

Several news web sites, such as the online-only St. Louis Beacon, submitted entries. But this year’s slate of prizes were dominated by print-and-ink newspapers, many of which are teetering on bankruptcy and have slashed newsrooms because of an erosion in revenue that has migrated to the internet.
