Nintendo DS at Mariners Opener: Not quite ready for big leagues

The best thing about using a Nintendo DS during today's Seattle Mariners home opener, by far, was the hot dog. I tapped a few buttons to submit my order, and in just 10 minutes it was delivered hot and steaming to my seat, with a cold bottle of soda and some tasty fries.

As a food-ordering device, this thing is fantastic.

As a baseball companion, the DS isn't quite there. It shows lots of promise, but based on my experience at Safeco Field today, Nintendo still has some work to do if it wants to make its dual-screen gaming machine a must-have gadget for serious baseball fans.

If you're just tuning in, this is the third season that Nintendo has been experimenting with what it calls the "Nintendo Fan Network" at Mariners games. It uses a wireless network to deliver a host of free services and features to people using Nintendo DS devices in the stands. This year, Nintendo added an ESPN partnership and, as a bonus, is offering free in-game Nintendo DSi rentals for the first three months of the season.

The experience includes lots of extras, such as the food-ordering system, sports headlines, casual games and the ability to send messages to other fans in the stadium. Great entertainment for kids.
