Data center GM leaves Microsoft

Data center guru Michael Manos is leaving Microsoft to become a senior vice president at Digital Realty Trust, according to a news release today from the tech real estate company. As noted by Data Center Knowledge, Manos was a champion of Microsoft's "Generation 4" data-center strategy, a modular approach that houses servers in shipping containers for flexibility and efficiency.

It's the latest in a series of personnel changes in Microsoft's data-center operations. The news comes a week after Microsoft hired Yahoo's former operations vice president, Dayne Sampson, into its data-center unit. Data center architect James Hamilton left Microsoft for Amazon late last year.

Manos said in the news release that his new job will allow him to build on his Microsoft work.

"During my time at Microsoft, I have been able to devote a significant portion of my time to industry education concerning datacenters, including development of industry standards and shaping the way companies design and build datacenters," he said. "That has been very rewarding. One of the most appealing aspects about joining Digital Realty Trust is that I will be able to do that on an even larger scale."
