Microsoft hasn't yet given an official Windows 7 release date, but that doesn't appear to be stopping the industry from gearing up for its expected debut later this year. During chipmaker AMD's conference call with analysts yesterday, executive Bob Rivet called the new OS a potential boon for discrete graphics processing, according to the Seeking Alpha transcript.
After initially reserving comment on Oracle's purchase of Sun Microsystems, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer appeared to refer to the deal in Cairo, Egypt, today. "I have no idea why a software company would buy a hardware company," he said, according to Reuters. "We don't want to buy any hardware companies."
Maybe Ballmer could speed up talks with Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz by dropping more F-bombs into the conversation. ValleyWag has the audio of Bartz's slip-up on the company's conference call yesterday. Hey, at least she's getting comfortable in the job.
Speaking of Microsoft and Yahoo, comments by Bartz didn't offer any clarity on the possibility of a deal. "Add it up and no one — perhaps even Bartz — knows what’s going on with Yahoo and Microsoft," ZDNet's Larry Dignan concludes. "But a lot of folks are hoping for a Microsoft deal."
Microsoft pen and touch technology guru Bert Keely, a co-founder of the company's Tablet PC team, is among the speakers this evening at a WTIA event in Seattle about next-generation user interfaces.
