Twitter's
much-discussed hiccups yesterday, including the disappearance of some user icons, had many people
pointing the finger at Amazon.com. Twitter uses Amazon's S3 web service for storing profile pictures, background pictures, and providing additional backup, and many wondered if problems with S3 were behind Twitter's technical issues. But Amazon isn't having any of it. Asked if Twitter's problems yesterday had anything to do with Amazon Web Services, Amazon spokeswoman Kay Kinton responded: "Not related."
Kinton pointed to Amazon Web Services' dashboard, which didn't record any problems with S3 or other services when I checked yesterday afternoon. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone didn't mention Amazon in his blog post explaining what happened.
In addition to being a user of Amazon's S3, Twitter has a relationship with Amazon.com CEO Jeff Bezos, who is a personal investor in the microblogging service.
