Kindle as a social network?

Amazon rolled out its new large-screen Kindle DX just a few weeks ago. So what's next for Kindle development? Amazon hasn't said much about its future plans for the electronic reader, but a slew of trademark and patent filings from the company provide some intriguing hints. The latest? Amazon just filed for a trademark that indicates it's positioning Kindle as a social networking platform.

Amazon's June 26 trademark application for the word mark "Kindle" covers:

Online social networking services; providing a website for the purposes of social networking; providing online computer databases and online searchable databases in the field of social networking; providing information in the field of social networking.

Combine that with Amazon's recent patents for inserting advertisements into e-books, and for an electronic pen that finds the digital version of printed text, and you have a very interesting set of possibilities.
