Amazon.com has experimented this year with letting people swap used video games and DVDs for Amazon gift card credit. Now the online retail giant is signaling it has even bigger plans for the trade-in program. Amazon, in a new job posting, says it will "dramatically expand" the trade-in business to include other products and other countries. The company apparently sees trade-ins as a growth area during the recession -- with consumers watching their wallets and looking for deals.
Here's a blurb from an Amazon job posting this week for a Senior Product Manager/TPM, Amazon Trade-in Business:
The Amazon Trade-In business provides customer value at all stages in a product’s lifecycle and will help fuel the growth of Amazon’s businesses worldwide. In the years to come we will dramatically expand the scope of the program, spanning new categories and countries. Come join us as we tackle the challenges of a new, fast-growing business, working with a wide range of systems and teams across the company.
Amazon isn't the only company out there trying to cash in on trade-in programs. On the video game front, Best Buy, Wal-mart, Toys "R" Us, and GameStop are all offering game trade-in programs of various kinds.
