Ubuntu Linux founder likes its chances against Windows 7

Mark Shuttleworth, founder of the popular Ubuntu Linux distribution, tells InternetNews.com that he's looking forward to Microsoft's upcoming release of Windows 7 as an opportunity for Linux make gains in desktop and portable computers -- particularly on netbooks.

Whether or not you agree with his logic, the comments further solidify the emerging netbook market as a key battleground for computer operating systems in the coming years. Microsoft has been at a disadvantage in recent years because the beefy Windows Vista doesn't run on the small, Web-oriented machines. Here's an excerpt from the story:

Shuttleworth sees the netbook market as a key one where Ubuntu can compete very effectively against Windows 7. That's especially true since Microsoft won't be able to continue to afford providing the aging Windows XP to netbook makers without disrupting its own margins and historical patterns of growth, he added.

"Windows 7 for us is a level playing field where we'll be competing with a new version of Windows that can play on netbooks, which has a price attached to it," Shuttleworth said. "We think we can deliver a very compelling value proposition up against that."
