The ugly IPO market

Don't call it a comeback.  Two venture-backed companies -- OpenTable and SolarWinds -- are on deck to go public this week creating a few rays of hope that the dreadful IPO market may finally be starting to turn.

But venture capitalists I've talked to in recent weeks are less than optimistic that a recovery is in place.

There are a few companies still waiting to go public in Washington state, with Omeros and Intelius keeping records on file with the SEC. In fact, just last week Omeros filed an ammended registration statement, signaling that it may once again be getting serious about the IPO.

Just how bad is the IPO market? According to VentureSource, the last venture-backed company to go public was RackSpace Hosting in August 2008.

It's even worse in Washington state. It's been more than two years since a high-tech company went public. (Kirkland-based Clearwire went public in March 2007).

It's ugly out there. And, I am sure some VCs are wondering if the IPO window ever open?
