Amazon expands MP3 business with German site launch

Amazon.com is expanding the reach of its MP3 digital music service. The company today opened a new MP3 store on its German language retail site. It's the second international rollout of Amazon's digital music service, which launched in the U.K. in December.

Amazon launched the MP3 business in September 2007, selling music tracks free of anti-copy software, known as digital rights management or DRM, in a direct challenge to Apple's dominant iTunes. It's not clear what kind of sales the Amazon MP3 business has generated, but some argue that it played a role in pushing Apple toward the DRM free model.

Asked about any further international plans for Amazon MP3, company spokeswoman Cinthia Portugal had no comment.
