Marchex results; Dell and WiMax; RealNetworks; and more

Marchex reported Q1 revenue fell to $26.9 million from $37 million a year ago, a drop of 28 percent. The Seattle online search and advertising company reported its Q1 net loss grew to $1.7 million, from a loss of $1.2 million a year earlier.

InfoSpace said its Q1 net loss grew to $5 million, from a loss of $2.8 million a year ago. The Bellevue internet search company said Q1 revenue dropped to $39.1 million from $42.2 million the same quarter a year ago.

RealNetworks is likely to lose the DVD-copying lawsuit brought by the major Hollywood studios, writes Wired's David Kravet in an opinion piece. And while that may be the correct legal decision based on the reading of the The Digital Millennium Copyright Act, Kravet notes that the law is misguided.  "RealNetworks is making the silly argument that its RealDVD software does not circumvent encryption technology. But what’s sillier is that RealNetworks finds itself in a courtroom, facing monetary sanctions, for producing a product that should be legal," he writes. Real, for its part, argues that the case is not about a DMCA claim but a contract claim.

Seattle-based Onvia, which helps companies bid for public and private sector contracts, said first quarter revenue grew to $5.9 million, a 10 percent jump from the same quarter a year ago. The Seattle company said its Q1 net loss was $631,000, compared with a net loss of $445,000 the same quarter a year ago.
