A few hundred people are listening to Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff outline the company's cloud-computing platform in downtown Seattle right now. It's the latest in a series of stops in the company's "Cloudforce" world tour, but this one has higher stakes than most, taking place in the home region of two other big cloud-computing players: Microsoft and Amazon.
Benioff brought out customers including Starbucks and Portland's Webtrends to show the capabilities of the company's Force.com platform, including integration with Web services from Amazon, Google, Facebook and Twitter.
Benioff made sure to sip a cup of Starbucks on stage as Nancy Richardson, a program manager with the coffee company, showed how Starbucks used Force.com as the platform for MyStarbucksIdea.com and Pledge5.com.
"There is no doubt, it’s empirical, that this is the fastest way to build cloud applications," Benioff said.
The Salesforce.com CEO also took his traditional swipes at Microsoft, referring to the Redmond company's spreadsheet program when an app on Force.com quickly translated a page into Japanese. "Try doing that with Microsoft Excel when you get home," he said.
